8 Other Londons

There are more than thirty other Londons around the world. The following are eight examples:
1. London, Ontario, Canada
Originally named by an eighteenth-century Lieutenant- Governor of Canada, John Graves Simcoe, the settlement did not really develop until the 1820s, and was finally incorporated as a city in 1855. With a population of nearly half a million, it is much the largest of the other Londons around the world. It parallels many of the landmarks in the original London. It has its own St Paul's Cathedral and its own Blackfriars Bridge, as well as a suburb called Ealing and a market called Covent Garden.
2.London, Ohio, USA
The county seat of Madison County, the town was established in 1810 and given the name by its founding fathers. Its current population is just less than 9000.
3.London, Kentucky, USA
The county seat of Laurel County, it was founded in 1826 and has a population of just less than 6000. Colonel Sanders' original Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant was in Laurel County and London now plays host to an annual World Chicken Festival.
4.London, Equatorial Guinea
A small settlement in this West African country still bears the name given to it in the nineteenth century, when Britain leased land on its coast to use as bases in the campaign against the slave trade.
5.London, Limpopo Province, South Africa
The largest of three villages in South Africa that have the name.
6.London, Belize
There is a small village in the former colony of British Honduras that was named after the imperial city in the early nineteenth century.
7.London, Nigeria
Another small village that takes its name from London.
8.London, Kiritimati (Christmas Island)
Most of the place names on the Pacific island were invented by a French priest, Father Emmanuel Rougier, who leased the island from 1917 to 1939 in order to grow coconut trees. He lived in a small settlement he called Paris and named the port on the opposite side of the main entrance to the lagoon Londres, or London. It is now the main settlement on the island.
